UNISEY TO BECOME RECOGNISED CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

The University of Seychelles is in the process of being given the status of a ‘Recognised Centre’ of the University of London.

This follows the signing of a formal agreement between the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Seychelles, Dr Rolph Payet and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, Professor Geoffrey Crossick in the presence of the President Michel, who is the Chancellor of the University of Seychelles.

President James Michel has hailed the signing of the agreement noting that the offer for the University of Seychelles to become a Recognised Centre of the University of London is evidence of the confidence in the partnership between the two universities. He said that, “Since our inception, we have worked hard to provide an environment that will help young people acquire skills and knowledge, allowing them to move forward in a knowledge based society.”

For his part, Professor Crossick said that the University of London is very pleased to be supporting the University of Seychelles, which ‘aspires to become an educational hub in the region.’

The President also held talks on the possibilities for introducing new degree programmes in Seychelles during his visit to the University of London International Programmes. The process to become a Recognised Centre may take more than one year to achieve and will require further improvements and upgrading to the quality structure and operations of the University of Seychelles.

EXEMPLARY COOPERATION FOR SEYCHELLES-EU NAVAL FO
RCES

President James Michel has met with the Commander of EU Naval Forces, Rear Admiral Duncan Potts, at the Northwood Headquarters during his official visit to the UK.

Speaking of the role of the EU Naval Forces in the Indian Ocean, President Michel said that they “are successfully disrupting a large number of piracy attacks. This is highly commendable and has benefited Seychelles greatly, as we are on the forefront of the fight against piracy.” For that, President Michel expressed his appreciation to them and added that Seychelles counts on their continued support as our partners.

During the visit the President was updated on the EU Naval Force’s mission as part of the preparations for the Somalia Conference later this week.

As part of the briefing, Rear Admiral Potts commented “The briefing and discussion today has been an excellent opportunity for me to actively engage with the countries which border the area of operations to ensure that there is a common understanding of the issues as we develop our tactics to better tackle the problem of piracy at sea.”

President James Michel was met by the Baroness Stowel of Beeston on behalf of Queen Elizabeth the Second upon his arrival in London on Tuesday 21st of February.

UK TO OPEN PIRACY INTELLIGENCE CENTRE IN SEYCHELLES

The United Kingdom will provide the Director and Fund the construction of the new Regional Anti-Piracy Prosecutions Intelligence Co-ordination Centre (RAPPICC) based in Seychelles.

The announcement was made by UK’s Foreign Secretary William Hague on the 21st February only 2 days ahead of the London Conference on Somalia. Mr. Hague said, “I am pleased that the UK is able to provide the first Director and £550,000 to fund the construction of the RAPPICC, which will be operational in time for the seasonal increase in pirate activity.”

The new intelligence centre will coordinate the tracking of financial flows and enforcement operations and will help collate the evidence needed to issue international arrest warrants and prosecute pirates.

The Seychelles and Dutch governments, as well as the INTERPOL have made commitments to support the centre. Mr. Hague called on other governments and organizations to follow their lead.
